Our son Evan's story began when I was 20 weeks pregnant. My husband and I were on our way to find out the gender of our baby. We remember it like if it was yesterday. We were so excited that we were going to be able place a name on our angel's face. The tech was done with all the pics of our baby, and then she told us it was a boy! Shortly after the doctor came in with a nurse and the tech.
They told us the dreaded words that no parent wants to hear "their is something wrong with your baby". They told us he had an enlarged head due to the fact that he had a blockage between the third and fourth ventricle; called aqueductal stenosis, which caused the hydrocephalus. Our lives turned for the worst.
They told us to abort, that he didn't have a chance at a normal life! Quickly after starting all these tests to see if our son had anything else. Countless ultrasounds, echos for the heart, amniocentesis, blood work, MRI and many more. It was a depressing waiting game. We didn't know what to expect.
We felt alone.
Thank god for our families that helped us through the last few months of our pregnancy. On November 3, 2011 Evan Robert was born. 7lbs 8oz 20inch, gorgeous baby boy!! He had a slight head enlargement. But he was gorgeous. An angel from God! Evan underwent his first shunt placement surgery @ 4 days of life. It was the hardest thing we ever experienced.
Evan stayed in the NICU for about 16 days. He had a great 5 months and then his shunt got infected. Our little angel was hospitalized for a month. He had seizures and an infection in the shunt. Evan had his shunt externalized and re-shunted all in one month. It was so hard to see him in a hospital bed and unable to pick him up and hold him.
He fought through it all and overcame it. Evan is now a happy 10 month old baby boy. He has a 25% delay and many medicines to take. But he is happy and that is all that counts. God has blessed us with this little angel and we will do whatever it takes to give him a happy life <3
