My daughter Caitlin's neurosurgeon, Dr. Petra Klinge, means so much to us. She is the one we call with any question of problems. Last year my daughters neurosurgeon left our local children's hospital and moved to another state.
We were assigned another neurosurgeon but after reviewing Caitlin's case he realized she really needed someone with more expertise in Hydrocephalus. We were then assigned Dr. Klinge. During this time we were told that Caitlin would need 2 new catheters added to the top of her head.
Caitlin already had 2 shunts so that seemed very overwhelming to us. Because Dr. Klinge was new to us we took Caitlin to another hospital for a "second opinion" where we were told not to do anything that her CT's looked fine. We learned otherwise quickly and also learned how important Dr. Klinge would be to our family.
On Labor day 2009 Caitlin was rushed to the hospital for vomiting and lethargy. She was quickly given a CT scan and we were told she was hours away from not making it and had to be rushed to the ER right away. Dr. Klinge rushed in on her day off and a holiday to perform the emergency surgery. We had felt terrible about getting a second opinion and realized how important Dr. Klinge's expertise was going to be for the future.
