We met our son Mitchell's neurosurgeon, Dr. Leslie Helbusch, at Midwest Neurosurgery in Omaha, NE, before our son was even born. We had been given no hope and were told to terminate, and we wanted to actually talk to a neurosurgeon to see what could be done.
Our minds were already made up not to terminate, but we needed to know what exactly we were up against. My husband, my mother-in-law, my mom, and me all went for the 1st visit, expecting horrible news.
Dr. Helbusch told us, "When I was younger I thought I could play God, and now that I'm older I know I can't. I cannot predict the future. I will place the shunt at 2 days, and the rest is up to God." It was the best news we had ever heard, nothing sounded sweeter than this!
We had been told Mitchell had no brain, but Dr. Helbusch was the 1st dr. to explain to us that he DID have a brain, it was compressed by fluid and once the shunt was placed the brain would bounce back, like a sponge. He would not predict what areas would be damaged, because he was not God.
I have loved Dr. Helbusch ever since this day. He has also called us on a Sunday to give us results from tests, knowing that an anxious mommy and family are wanting answers. He has always been concerned about how Mitchell does in school, where other drs. don't seem to care.
He was the only dr. for a long time NOT to treat my baby like he was a science experiement, he is a human being with a soul and people who care about him. I can only hope there are more doctors like Dr. Helbusch, and I am so thankful that he is ours.
