When I was asked to write a short story of what Selma's Neurosurgeon means to us, it literally brought tears to my eyes. You see, Dr. Mohan was the first doctor that actually treated us with humility and kindness. After Selma was born with a severe brain hemorrhage, suffering strokes and seizures, most doctors wouldn't even look us in the eyes.
They wouldn't dare give us a glimmer of hope that our child would be ok. All they would say is she will either have this problem or that problem; they never told us things could actually be good. There were Neonatologists, Neurologists, Hematologists, etc. etc; doctor after doctor looking at her as a specimen and at us with pity. Upon discharge from the hospital, we were told by a Neonatologist to go home and try to treat her like a normal child. That is the way that most doctors reacted to our situation. They would answer our questions and move on to their next patient.
We met Dr. Mohan while Selma was in the NICU, but it was our first post-op appointment with him, when Selma was 4 weeks old when we started to realized what a wonderful person he truly is. Dr. Mohan actually sat down with us to discuss the brain and how it can do amazing things especially in such a young child. He didn't make us any promises, but he gave us hope. As parents, that's all we were looking for. We left that appointment with a new outlook on Selma's life.
Selma went on to have more surgeries and multiple trips to the ER. Many times, Dr. Mohan would meet us in the ER, sometimes waiting for us when we arrived. He has taken time out to respond to emails and phone calls at all hours of the day, never giving us the feeling that she is just a patient, but rather a child that he actually cares for and wants to see thrive. When Selma gets an MRI, he will show us the scans and explain what they mean for her.
We have seen many different doctors and no one has treated us this way. We truly consider ourselves blessed to have him as Selma's surgeon. Unfortunately, as parents of a child with Hydrocephalus we know that the chances are very high that she will need additional surgeries. Life has become a constant rollercoaster for our family, but we are so happy to have Dr. Mohan along with us for the ride.
